Help needed with DVD burner quick :)

Ok here's the story. I've just installed a new slave drive and a DVD burner. The new HDD is working fine, but when I have the burner hooked up it won't boot past the "detecting IDE Drives" screen which I take to mean it's not detecting it. I'm sure the new burner is hooked up to the secondary IDE channel and it's not the actual device because when I hook up the old one it still won't boot

The burner is a sony DRU830A.

any ideas? please this is driving me crazy.

appears it was the IDE cable, found a different one I had lying around and it's all good. should have done that first but no one said I wasn't an idiot
