"...[I]t says something unflattering about our era that prominent
    political figures --
who used to write declarations of independence, preambles to
    constitutions,
Gettysburg addresses, and such -- now use the alphabet only to make
    primitive
artifacts, like the letter-inscribed tablet that Charlemagne is
    said to have put
under his pillow each night, in the hope he'd wake up literate.
    Conservatives,
including most of the Founding Fathers, have always worried that
    the price of a
democratic system would be a mediocre nation. But George Washington
    and
William F. Buckley Jr. put together could not have foreseen, in
    their gloomiest
moments, the rise of Clinton-style über-mediocrity -- with its
    soaring
commonplaces, its pumped trifling, its platinum-grade triviality.
    The Alpha-dork
husband, the super-twerp wife, and the hyper-wonk vice president --
    together
with all their mega-weenie water carriers, such as vicious pit
    gerbil George
Stephanopoulos and Eastern diamondback rattleworm Sidney Blumenthal
    --
spent eight years trying to make America nothing to brag about.
    They failed.
And that is, ultimately, what makes 'Living History' such a good
    nonread. If
they're going to throw the book at us, and the book is by Hillary,
    the republic will
endure (and the Republicans will prevail)." --P.J. O'Rourke

I have enjoyed the writing of P.J. since the early days of Rolling Stone- the man has an undeniable way with words.

Of course, he is totally full of shit, also.

So, while I sing his praises, you might consent to join me in the refrain?

Do you agree as to his revue of Hill's book?

I haven't read the book in question (BTW- have you?), so I can't judge the validity of the review.

Can't say I'm in any particular hurry to read either.
I have a major treatise on The Family Circus to wade through, first.

A preferred read, to be sure.

    Do you/have you read "Pogo"?

    The best of all time.

currently reading Give War a Chance. Don't agree with a lot of his conservative views, but he is damn funny. and i'm sick of all the hippy liberal BS in western society, so I'm not nearly as hostile to his thinking as i was back in the day.

    I'm stunned.

    What day was this, myfiles?

Anyone mind if I crack a cold one?

This is truly momentous, and worthy of a small celebration!

I love to read William F. Buckley Jr's columns in the sacbee. Hes has witty intelligent style to his writings, & humorous too.

WFB Jr. is the "Leo Kottke" of intellectual conservative thought as well as being the progenitor of the conservative movement.

He is the best, IMHO, of course.
