    I was pushing the gearstick to the left.

    I was, at that point, convinced that I wasn't
    Until I looked down and had to admit he was right... for once....

    You need to learn to hold your hand properly and that won't happen.

    For 1st and 2nd hold the gearstick with your left thumb at the bottom and pinky at the top. Then push away from you.

    For the other gears the thumb should be at the top and the pinky at the bottom. For 3rd and 4th simply push forward or pull back. For 5th pull towards you and forward.

    It's very natural if you hold your hand the right way.

    Does that make sence.

    I did a lot of stupid things when I was learning to drive, but the actual operation of the vehicle was never a problem....I don't think I could even get the wrong gear on purpose. Took me about 130 hours of lessons and two tests to pass tho'.
