service packs are cumulative patches. point is the same as with applying patches one by one - increased security and/or stability.

    service pack 3 for what?

yes, next year, when service pack 3 for xp is released, you should upgrade.

in the meantime you can keep your system updated with latest patches through windows update.

no. when flaw or security breach is discovered by microsoft patches are issued as a remedy. they overwrite old system files with new patched ones.

multiple patches are grouped together into service packs. so you have xp service packs, office service packs etc.

Thats why when you see a new version of a windows iso for D/L , say ETHO 's windows you look at the date . It may say Sept. 07 etc. it saves you D/L'ing of all the sp2 .

Thats why if you format a lot you make a slipstreamed install disk to save time . If you do a clean install of Win 2000 Pro for example , it takes hours to upgrade to sp4 .
