5MBit/s = 6144kbit/s = 768kbyte/s
As you are able to upload with 600kbyte/s you use almost 80% of your theoretical (!) bandwidth. You also have to consider at least 10-15% traffic overhead and then you're almost at the maximum anyway. It looks like you made the error of mistaking kbit for kbyte.

The thing is, internet connection speeds are typically specified in Kilobits, transfer speeds (in uTorrent, at least) are Kilobytes. As 1 Byte = 8 Bits you only need to calculate some and these numbers make perfect sense

Yeah, Daniel is right, you've mistaken bit for byte. It's a common mistake people make. Go here for a great bit/byte calculator.
From your test, 600 kB/s seems like more than you actually should be able to up. With the mentioned theoretical 5 Mb/s on the other hand, 600 makes sense.
I'd rather go speedtest.net to check it out.
Also, BT transfer rates depend on so many factors and variables it is impossible to give you a straight answer without further info from your side (which trackers, what seeders/leechers ratio, what tracker speeds etc.).

lol, yeah. I don't know where the 6MBit/s came from, probably because they're my downstream speed
