but the free space will not return to the disc as it would with a cd-rw.
It's possible, as long as you a full erase rather than a "quick" one. I use Prassi PrimoDVD, which came with my PC, but that's the only thing I use it for, other than it's Nero 6 all the way!
he is saying you would get the space back on a cdrw, but you wouldnt on a cdr, as it isnt possible

Roxio has long had a drag-to-disc component, I forget what it used to be called, now it's
just "Drag-To-Disc" in EasyCD/DVD Creator 6. And yeah, it has to format the disk in order to
    use it in that manner.
I've never really used it, so I can't tell you all the specifics.

Ah. As I was going to say, the format you are referring to is called directCD, and it is an experimental format for CDR's that enables drag n' drop.

    DirectCD? That sucked!
You just can't use a CDR or CDRW like a hard drive. You can use it as a "floppy", but it ain't worth the time it takes or the efforts. A ZIP drive is more practical in this case.

once a cd-r or cd-rw is formated with the UDF file system, you CAN use it as you use a hard drive. you can add, delete (limited delete options on cd-r), rename, etc. you can also install programs onto a UDF formatted cd-r or cd-rw, just as you can on a hard drive. so i guess that means that you CAN use a cd-r or cd-rw like you use a hard drive.

Uggh... I used DirectCD on two perfectly good CDRs as an experiment. It failed. Miserably. The CDrs now make good coasters.
