Because there's an physiological mechanism in the body which would prevent such a thing from happening.

If you tried to strangle yourself to death, you would reach unconciousness before death, relaxing your grip on your throat and hence coming around soon after.

Bar a suicidial f*** with a one-in-a-billion-chance disorder, it would be impossible to strangle yourself to death.

But if he wrapped the wet rawhide around his neck... as you say... would it not contract and do the choking?

Once he passed out, the rawhide would still be "doing it's job"
