Gears Of War or Halo 3

Both are pretty similar but Halo 3 is better to pick up, play, and enjoy it much quicker. It's also really addictive. Online Halo 3 is better than Gears of War from what I hear. I have both games but I only play Halo 3 online.

Now that Call of Duty 4 is out, I would HIGHLY recommend that as your choice as well. It is up there with Gears of War and Halo 3.

It is really hard to compare the two since they are so different.

Halo 3 multiplayer wins hands down imo.
I enjoyed the single player mode in Gears a lot more than Halo 3.

Bioshock is probably my favorite shooter, although it has limited replay value.

It really comes down to what you enjoy most competing against others on-line, a really good story or new and fresh gameplay.

I think you should buy Halo 3. I have both and I can tell you Halo 3 is much more fun. The only thing better in Gears of War, without doubt, is the graphics.
