I'm about to get one of these to try it out...

Just so I understand...I'll be able to install my BT client on the server, right? It appears these things are not preconfigured as seedboxes.

lol, none of the server companies 'preconfigure' your server as a seedbox. You are leased a server computer of a certain spec with an operating system installed and capable of remote access, all other configuration must be done by the client to set up the server for their purpose be it a website, a forum or a seedbox, it is up to the client to set up and maintain the server for their use.
Since this is new for you I strongly recommend you choose Windows 2003 web edition as the operating system on your server, since choosing a Linux distro maybe quite a learning curve for you.

I've seen some offered with TorrentFlux preinstalled, for example. I didn't say I wanted one preconfigured.

Honestly, I'd rather do the setup myself that's why I'm asking. I just want to have all my questions answered before I make the jump and I'm on leased time.

And, BTW...I'm a software developer so no learning curve on the Linux...just asking questions about seedboxes. Asking questions does not imply ignorance...

these are not seedboxes but dedicated servers, which you make whatever you want to use.. a seedbox is just one of those uses.
    Have a nice day.

Thank you...it looks like that's all I need to know.

I'm just used to having to buy more crap when I think I know what I'm getting but I end up having to buy more capability...

    Thanks again.

that is why I said may be a learning curve for you I didn't mean to imply ignorance I was trying to cover all the bases, to often replies in threads are monosyllabic and therefore are unhelpful, if you are a software developer then configuring a seedbox should present few problems but in that case I would suggest a native Linux client like rtorrent, which uses far less system resources than torrentflux.
