Well, one can hardly compare a real topsite with some newsgroup account. I grant you however that the ftp way is ever the classic one and it's easiest on the hardware too. Any filesharing protocol can crash your router and parity checks from newsgroup downloads can be a real pain. The only issue I see is that gaining access to proper topsites (and not those that are outrageous enough to call themselves a topsite) is certainly not for everybody, else they wouldn't live very long
