question about power consumption

what would be the average power consumption of a 24'' desktop computer?

Depends on the processor, graphics card and the other installed components.
But, if you are talking very generically this might help.

Typically, the amount of electricity a computer uses is between 65 watts and 250 watts. The monitor often needs between 35 watts and 80 watts of electricity as well. Most desktop computers have a label that lists how much electricity they need, but this is generally the theoretical maximum and not an average representation.

A Power Supply Wattage Calculator might also be of some use to you, depending on what it is that you are trying to figure out.

Silverstone makes a product called the AngelEye that will tell you exactly how much your setup consumes.

I know 'generally' how much power my system needs at peek by using PSU calculators, but it'd be nice to know exactly.

I am guess that that software only works with Silverstone power supplies? I did a goggle and couldn't find a thing on it.
Do you have a link, or any more information?

Sorry about that...it's actually called the Power Angel.

It's not Silverstone specific, it'll work on anything.
My buddy from work (now "ex-work") had one that we used to calculate how powerful a UPS we'd need for systems we built.

Also of use if you upgrade vid cards to make sure your PSU can deal with the requirements.

Not really terribly useful for the home consumer but then again, it's not very expensive either and it removes guessing from the equation.

i was able to find out that my computer uses 280w max (all included).

so that is a good result for a 24'', right?

PC power consumption is not based on monitor size.

Ah, it's a piece of hardware. I was thinking that it was some kind of software, too bad.

If you are talking about the height of the box your system is in, that is irrelevant. The important thing is what's in the box, and that will determine how much power it will need. While your computer many only need around 280 watts at peak, mine needs about 455 watts. The height of my case is less than 24".
