Allright.. HEAR me my File-sharing brethren =
I live in India, which happens to be the second(or first) biggest Cd maker in the world. You know all those really nice CD's Sony, and Uni and other companies use.. well they're made here.

Acc to my sources (ME, .. I purchase CDs by the Lot) , the cost of one (blank) after packaging is close to Rs. 4.
yes... Rs.4.. Divide that by 45 to get the dollar price .. THATS $0.08.
most of the copying work is done somewhere in Asia for most companies.

Considering the quantities they work with, I don't see how their costing would rise somewhere above $1-2 per CD. Add to this their overheads.. artist payments (which aren't much,.,. ) etc etc. you are looking at a cost of MAXIMUM $ 7-8
(DOn't forget, 2 dollars a CD for 10 million Cd's is a lot... add to that royalties from other stuff and concerts)

And these are VERY conservative estimates, the costs should be less for them.

The ridiculusly large amounts of profit they are making are absolutly unfair.
they need to get more streamlined and more efficient if they feel they aren't making enough money..

Hmm.. on the other hand, my cousin who works in a Music company( cant name which.. ) was fired because of declining profits attributed to file-sharing.

WHich I BELIEVE is the true reason the RIAA and everyone else is so pissed.

Music sales have been decling and probably profits shrinking. In truth this is due the inefficient and old management and business plans run by Music companies who have never faced a Financial crisis situation and hence never had to STREAMLINE.

Now, due to the weakening economy (American specially) it seems that everyone in the organisations is blaming file-sharing. To admit their bad business practises would result in pay-cuts, andeven worse, . people being fired.

SO... the scape goat --- FILE-Sharers.

decided to add my opinion in here...

firstly, i haven't sent a letter as i don't live in the us but i agree that everyone in the us should send theirs in,
secondly, the fact that artist's are losing a lot of money because of p2p is BS, it's the labels that are losing money, big name artist's make most of their money from T.V. appearances & live concerts, also many artist's have embraced the internet and p2p for music, almost all the unsigned bands and smaller bands i have known have their own music up on their sites and encourage you to share it, for what better way is there to get your music heard? there are also many big name bands that have embraced the internet likes of U2 who rotated songs from their albums on their site for free d/l's and Offspring who have all the tracks to all but one of their albums on their site and were stopped from releasing "Conspiracy Of One" online by their record labels, & Linkin Park who have released countless tracks via their LP uderground site.

personally i have already spent 2000 pounds on CD's in my life (mostly legal), which ain't bad for being 17, and i buy albums whenever i can afford them, but in order to be able to listen to most of the music that i want to i have to d/l it as it may either a) not be available in this country, or B) i just can't afford it

i feel i've rambled enough for now so i'll quit whilst i'm behind

I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war // if you can tell me something worth fighting for

You know what keeps me warm at night? The knowledge that even if Kazaa (Lite) goes down, there will always be a substitute for downloading for us normal little people. Fuck the big captalistic bastards who don't give a damn about us, long live Kazaa and all other so called 'illegal' activities.
Hail to people who made KL possible and all other previous and coming proggies .

My prayers go out to all the 'nerds' and small people! Fuck 'm, those captalistic imperialistic pigs. They can't stop us and they never will!

I am not US citizen, so i could not sign the petition. But EFF seems to have very reasonable solution to the problem. I believe that most of all would like to listen to legal music.

The sad thing is that most of us who have greatest collections, are the most often original buyers.
I find file sharing as a very good way of promoting music, because if I find particular song/album interesting, I go to the shop and buy an original. Which does not change the fact that I am still called delinquent, with my collection of over 5000 illegal audio files.

On the other hand, music companies make millions out of nothing.
This "nothing" means the cost of physical production of a disc, cover & the box, transporting it to the place of selling PLUS artist royalty.
In Poland, usual price of a CD oscillates between 40 -60 PLN (10.1 - 15.2&#036 and consists of: 3.3% manufacturing & wrapping costs, 1.4% tranportation, 8.3% royalty and 30 - 35% retailer fee and all other costs (tax etc.).
So where the F K goes the rest half of our money???

Moreover, major companies localize their production in countries with cheap workforce (needless to say that in malaysia workers earn ~1$ for a DAY of work).
I just do not agree with such unfair practices, and I won't support them with my own money.

I signed the petition and sent the letter. And anything I get into comes to pass, musicsharing will become legal.
And I for one would gladly pay a reasonable fee for music sharing if I know it will give me a peace of mind AND ensure the artist that I like and support get paid.

Being an avid file sharer I feel I can ask this question (at the expense of being flamed big time, ....................... but being a big sharer that is my point, I'm allowed to ask)

How many have you ever run a retail/manufacturing/sexvice, business? And Genuinely understand the costs and issues involved?

I await being flamed by dickheads and liars.

    regards
