Electronic Frontier Foundation Releases File Sharing Recommendations
Suggests Voluntary Collective Licensing at Future of Music Event
For Immediate Release: Tuesday, February 24, 2004

San Francisco, CA - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) today announced the release of a report outlining its favored solution to the music file-sharing controversy. The EFF white paper recommends that the music industry adopt a model similar to that used by radio stations today, known as voluntary collective licensing. The proposal suggests a way that artists and copyright holders can get paid and music fans can share music freely at a reasonable charge without feeling like criminals.

"Voluntary collective licensing aligns the interests of the music industry with music fans," said EFF Senior Intellectual Property Attorney Fred von Lohmann, "The more people share music, the more artists and copyright holders should receive compensation for their creations."

The report, entitled "A Better Way Forward: Voluntary Collective Licensing of Music File Sharing," is part of the organization's "Let the Music Play" campaign.

Von Lohmann will speak on this and other topics from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 25, at the Future of Music Coalition's Music Summit West at Hastings College of Law, Louis B. Meyer Lounge, 198 Building, 1st Floor, 198 McAllister Street, in San Francisco.

again i say this is just piss in the wind , p2p will never stop and they know it , fear is our freind.

untill the recording company's bend to the fact and keep playing bullie boys, there will be some one and some way to curcum nav the system.

as i have said b4 , if the 3 million + users banded together and did a class action the music industry would have to change the way they do buisness

The realism is it costs too much to buy music and anything else, so for most the alt is to p2p it

never mind go to see it live ???? lol i would love to see my fav band live but i could never afford $100 a show, shit thats a month d/l and all the music i can get

make the cost equil to download costs and whazam, i would buy it in an instant

of course there are those ppl that will p2p for free no matter what, and that will never change, but if it was affordable for 90% of the population to buy then they would make money and we would all be happy

It again come down to cause and effect , they screw us, so we screw them

enough said, sign the petition, make noise, be heard. Just dont sit on the side line playing fox, while you have your pie and eat it too

I will write my letter when i get home.

But I just want to make a quick point.

If we pay monthly fees, or anyfees for file SHARING it defeats the purpose of p2p netwroks. If we end uppaying somesort of fees, we lose they win.

    I dont like to lose.

When you share your sandwhich at school, do you charge that person? No, you do not. If you share your cell phone for a few minutes with your friend so they can get a ride home or somthing, do you charge them? No. Sharing is a free term. So File Sharing should be free.

If the EFF plans on argreeing to a WINNING stettlement, they better keep things free. The banner idea was a good one, and i'm sure some of FREE solutions on that site (which i will also read when I get home) are good.

But what about a tax on burnable cd's and dvd's. Just think about it, every1 pays for burnable cd's. So impliment a tax of like 1 penny per cd, and like 2 or 3 penny's for a dvd. Just think about it, we only pay 1 extra dollar for 100 cd's, and like 2 or 3 bucks for the bigger and better dvd's. And we all know how many burnable cd packs people buy. And for those of us don't buy burnable cd's, but maybe only once or twice in a lifetime, we get a very nice compensattion, dont you say?

Sorry if this was already mentioned, I read up to page four b4 skipping to the last. But this was my idea and I think it is a good one (even if others have thought of it)

why do you think "music" cd-r's cost more?
its the same shit...they just tag em "music" cd-r's
to make you think they are better for burning mp3's
well, they are not, nor are they worth the extra money you pay for em
they are over priced so the artists get a cut
there's an article about it on tech-tv i think, look it up
I am just a worthless liar. I am just an imbecile.

On a given day or given circumstance, you think you have a limit.
And you then go for this limit and you touch this limit and you think "Ok, this is the limit".
As soon as you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further.

This could be reassuring - I don't see ANY mention of the username "KazaaLiteK++@KaZaA" listed in the list of users being named in the lawsuits on the RIAA Hit List at the RIAA Hit List link

I wonder why they didn't also list all the "Doe" lawsuits that we know they have prepared in advance? I bet it'll get really confusing in court if they ever happen to sue someone whose name really IS "Doe"! Maybe they could claim mistaken identity?
    Dare to think for yourself.

So here's the answer (from the UK).

All file sharers in the US change their names to John(Joan?) Doe!

Seriously, good luck to all you criminals - living proof we were right to send our sheep stealers and footpads to the colonies!
