DVD converting to Amv

What i am trying to do is convert Dvd's to Amv to play on a mp4 player. I get the idea i need to convert to another format first then use the amv converter that comes with the player. If that is so can anyone help me with info on how to do it. I have tried using xilisoft dvd ripper and converter to a Xvid movie (*.avi) am i doing the right thing or not. It seems slow but have no idea if there is a quicker program to do it or not. Thanks for any help.

can 2 mpeg files be joined then converted to amv file
