When I first started, there weren't any private torrent communities as such (a few scene torrent sites for topsite access, but these were exclusively for filtering the material to torrent sites - I bet the antip2p didn't know of these places).
All the public communities were signup...
So, as for the private communities, these appeared around the start of 2005 (fsc, **-* etc.), and multiplied when more communities started up with no open door system. The reason was the demise of Loki, Torrent Bytes, SuprNova etc. and the feeling that those in power were now waging a war against Bit Torrent (prior to this, it was Kazaa).
Of course, the take down of Elite sealed the fate of the open door tracker, and very few of them exist today. Those that are open door have a restrictive membership, which means you cannot join unless a vacancy exists.
As for private sites, I usually get invited by existing staff, or code my own sites...
