Thread: How to play .mkv files?

  1. #1
Just downloaded the movie Conqueror of Shamballa and the file is .mkv. What do I use to play it? I have a VLC but that only has the audio but no visual, what should I do?

There probably is a codec you can install for it. But try out KMPlayer, it should do the trick and it's a really nice media player. Nice for taking captures
What an ordinary day, the extraordinary way.

First of all, you should install Haali Media Splitter (click).
Second of all, if your CPU is "out of date" (a.k.a. Single core below 3GHz) you should search and install CoreAVC. It's not for free but it helps a lot. After you do this, if you have ffdshow installed you should disable "x264 libvacodec decoding" because the one above is far better than ffdshow, at least on HD ground.
Last of all, you should install DirectVOB Sub for easy running and editing subtitles. Just make sure the .sub name is identicall to the .avi/.mpeg one, in order to load the subtitle automatically.

For viewing HD movies i recommend Windows Media Player Classic (free, no install needed), especially if your computer is getting old.

Thanks for all the help. I'm now using the KMPlayer and after a few updates here and there it's working perfectly.

You can install the kcodec first and try playing it in the Kcodec media classic player. You can also try the VLC player it is known to be the best and it supports most of the video formats.
