It's not for anyones safety, it's so that uT can force all those people who have avoided 1.7.x to upgrade and so some trackers can flex their muscles.
If you check the uT changelog now, they have changed it to say it affects all 1.7.x and 1.8.x builds. This is a different story to the earlier change log that stated 1.6.x builds were also affected. I wonder if we'll get a changelog for the changelog.
uT staff are not above lying to get what they want, and for some reason they wanted everyone on 1.7.6. Listing 1.6.x in the changelog was a lie, because they knew when they posted that it was not affected, and I know they knew
Notice how all 1.7.x and 1.8.x versions are affected (since april last year), and yet this bug is dicovered by accident and not by a large number of users being crashed. Even if you are attacked by this, you can leave uT happily running with the general tab open and it will not crash. It requires you to view the peers list while connected to the attacker to crash.
I'm guessing that 90-95% of the time, you are doing other things while uT runs in the background, which means you don't need the peers list open and uT will not be susceptible.
A few sides have been spreading FUD about this issue, including uT staff, when the reality is that this is not that big a deal at all.
Whatever the upgrade is for, it's not for safety.
