Like was suggested earlier, Life on Mars is a great show.
Doctor Who and Torchwood are great aswell.
oh, and although this is kind of a more Irishy show (but it was shown on Channel 4, so i don't know where that leaves it) you should take a look at "Father Ted".

Red dwarf is worth a look, a sci-fi sitcom, but thats quite old. Also Spooks is good, a program about spies.
