i still dunno why they have to hit the panic button everytime a new version is released. 1.6.1 was so safe and nice. still found nothing wrong with it
from the utorrent forums, not sure about the validity, but i'm sure a dev will post about this sooner or later on this post:

"The original bug that was fixed in 1.7.6 was not present in 1.6.1.
The bug that 1.7.7 fixes IS present in 1.6.1 and will NOT be fixed in a new 1.6.x build."

    found here: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=29330&p=12

I'd wait for a post from some one in the utorrent team, but this sounds like reason enough to upgrade to me. better safe then sorry I say.
    I'm upgrading now.

    EDIT:
Confirmation from a mod, same thread:

"There was some miscommunication when 1.7.6 was announced that caused the changelog for 1.7.6 to initially include 1.6.x as an affected branch (when in fact it isn't affected by that bug). The latest version (1.7.7) actually does fix a potential security flaw that has existed in µTorrent's implementation of the extension protocol since 1.4.

    Which change?
    - Fix: (potential) remote crash bug with extension protocol (affects all 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8 builds released to date)"

Time to upgrade you 1.6.1 people, or find a new client.
    Down with 1.6.1!!
    o hai

That's not any kind of proof. It is a claim made by uT staffers which cannot be backed up by anybody.

Take one group of uT staffers willing to lie about things so 1.6.1 will be killed off, a complete lack of information on how to recreate the bug, and the lack of even a single report in their bug forum about it and they'll have to do more to convince me.

They already got it wrong last time, this time there is not even the slightest chance for anyone else to verify their claims. It's extremely convenient for them.

I wont be recommending any upgrades till I can verify this myself.

Meh...I don't even know if I believe this shit. Last time they said 1.6.1 was affected then it wasn't then it was and now this.

After all this shit I'm thinking it's time to fuck UTorrent off all together. BitTorrent inc has completely ruined the best client out there.
