thanks to this thread i will score As in my english classes now
more on topic, i dont think it really matters where the site is hosted. if there has to be a takedown, it could happen anywhere. as far as i can remember none of the sites recently taken down were hosted in the us. so the best bet is to stay in close communities and keep them safe

LoL you download very little US material...i find that hard to believe. So no software, movies, music, games, apps, tv shows? As a majority of software, games, music, apps, and tv shows popular on such sites are US Copy written.

No matter where you download something, if you dont own the copyright, you are at risk.

none of the files are hosted on the servers, thats how torrenting works. Therefore it doesnt matter at all where the torrent server is located, as it isnt breaking any laws, the users possibly are.

If you torrent, there is a 95% chance that you will connect to a peer in the US on nearly all the trackers out there, as the US has a large number of torrent users. So thats how youll be at risk....you cant get in trouble for accessing a torrent site, as you are not breaking any laws in doing so (unless its some sicko site)

So if you are really worried about it...use your firewall and block the US ip range.

the only stuff i download which is US material is maybe some games and a few films (but not many). overall i would say US material constitutes perhaps 10% of my total content.

the vast majority of what i download is UK TV, UK music and European and Asian films. i hate Hollywood with a passion and consider US TV to be mostly garbage, except for a couple of shows which which are ok.

it may be hard for an american to understand that there is a world outside of the US, but there is, and the quality is often much higher than the trash produced by hollywood. i dont listen to much american music either.

as i mainly use british torrent sites, ive been led to believe that US-based sites are where the dangers lie. perhaps thats wrong, but i feel safer not using sites hosted in the US.

the country i live in has just introduced some very harsh anti-file-sharing laws, which can result in up to 1 year in prison if prosecuted and found guilty, so i would like to be cautious (i am british, but live abroad).

But as I stated, it doesnt matter where the site is hosted...it matters where the file is hosted!

Torrenting =files not hosted on site!

Meaning, you can be on a server based in sweden or romania or whathave you but still have peers connecting from anywhere in the world. When you download something, click the peers tab and you will see plenty of people connecting to you from "anti-filesharing" countries. Any of which can be agents.

It doesnt matter where the site is hosted, its where the peers connecting to you are from.

Not going on US hosted sites does absolutely nothing for you, as you will still be connected to peers from the US for your torrents...meaning still "in jeopardy"

Your paranoia is unjust and pointless as its not the sites you need to worry about...just the peers.

hmmm...maybe you're right, but what bothers me about US sites is if my details are passed on to the authorities of the country i live in and pressure put on them to prosecute me.

knowing what the americans are like about filesharing, i could imagine them trying to prosecute filesharers in other countries. however, i doubt that the romanians or swedish or dutch would try and pressure my current country in to prosecuting me.

lol they have way too many people in their own country to try to sue people in other countries.

For every 1 they prosecute, the press about them makes 10,000 try it and start using it.
