Near Dark(1987)
Director Kathryn Bigelow's gorgeous and gory 1987 film about a family of vampires who roam the modern West in a van never achieved the recognition it deserved.
Starring Adrian Pasdar(Heroes),Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen and with a score by Tangerine Dream it is a times both beautiful and terrifying.Without a doubt one of the best horror movies of the 80's.
Watch out for the bar scene.![]()
Near Dark is quite a divisive film, IMO.
Personally, I didn't like it but I know folks who do.
Maybe it's the crude nature of the vamps- essentially they're trailer trash with superpowers- or maybe the complete lack of self-awareness- they kill (in big, sloppy massacres like the bar scene you cite) and feed and that's about all.
Where's the romance in an eternal life like that?
I'm not saying they need to be complete fags like Cruise and Pitt but a bit of culture would be nice.
And finally, what's up with that cure?

Near Dark was made a time when the romanticism of the vampire was barely nascent.Kathryn Bigelow also made it a point that the killers in her film are never even referred to as vampires so they didn't have to adhere to certain rules.
That being said I'm more of a vampire as animal devotee(a la Salem's Lot or a film I think you said you admired Shadow of the Vampire)but at the same time not a big fan of gore .
Don't really like my bloodsuckers as romantic leads, although I got a kick out of Chris Saradon in Fright Night.
If you dig the romance Clocker you should be aware of the upcoming film Twilight. It's garnered a bit of buzz.
It ain't so much the "romance", I'd just prefer something less one dimensional.
I'd like to think that, given the option-eternal life with heightened abilities, I could do more than just slaughter people and sleep.
In a way, that's just Supersize Me with more hemoglobin.
Also-and I'm aware of the problem in applying logic to the genre-I was was struck by the implausibility of a band of homicidal maniacs remaining undetected in such a low population area as the American Southwest.
That roadhouse slaughter probably wiped out 10% of the people in that shithole little town and the Near Dark gang had to do that every night...even Barney Fife would start to wonder after a week or so.
Anyways, this is probably overanalyzing the film.
It is what it is and at least there wasn't a slew of sequels to bleed out whatever impact it originally had.
