So unless you feel compelled to argue that a Bollywood film like Om Shanti Om should also be classed as being "big" I think in defining what consitutes well known (unfortunately)we are talking U.S . common man here.
By that logic, we totally negate the worth of the thread entire.

Why shouldn't Indian films, worthy of merit, though not widely received by the West be worthy of the thread title? Having said that, Little Voice was huge in the UK but it was also a British film with British actors and to be honest, not many of those (British films) are so markedly remarkable as Little Voice.

So, I think the broadness of the thread title is more to blame for the fuckery contained therein. It pisses me off and you and Clocker and Snee and most other people with an affection for good film when we read 'The Matrix' or some other such banality.

A new thread is called for with reasonable parameters as to what we want to read in that particular thread. I know I haven't been altogether constructive in this thread but I might be if some of youse film buffs create something worth the effort.

    Or do something else.

That was, in a very ineffectual way, what I was trying to say.

Use google translate Gibberish to English on all my future posts.

And for the record I loved the Matrix, haven't seen Little Voice and would class myself as a populist.

But do you really feel that 'The Matrix' has any place in this thread in particular? I'm sure I've read it somewhere within this thread to my chagrin and probable self-indulgent outburst. I could be wrong but I can't be arsed to check. However, you get my gist.

I'm a populist too but that's got fuck all to do with the thread.

    Quite the antithesis, like.

I see your point(s), Chalice and Snee but am unsure how to address them.
Basically, considering myself rather well read, I figure that if I haven't heard of a film, then probably most folks haven't.

Little Voice clearly exposes the fallacies of this position.
Looking at it's wiki entry I see that it did indeed make quite a splash in Engerland but, as Eyes noted, it sank into obscurity over here.
Believe me, classifying LV as an unknown film was not meant to be a slight to the British film industry or it's public but is probably more a reflection of the overbearing American ego you all are so fond of...I assume that, just due to the nature of the beast , furriners are well acquainted with American product though the reverse is not necessarily true.

I don't know how we could establish "reasonable parameters" for this thread or, assuming we even did so, how we'd protect the purity of the thread...tis the open nature of the net that would guarantee The Matrix showing up eventually.

    Certainly open for suggestions though.

I for one don't feel the need for parameters.
Contrary to how it may appear I find it bloody entertaining when someone innocently posts that Ben Hur is a great "unknown" film.

It's about a guy named Ben who undergoes a sex change.
Her is spelled Hur because it's foreign.
Don't let that put you off though because foreign as pertains to movies, is just another word for more nudity.

Been thinking a lot recently about an early offering from Brian De Palma. Actually I've been pining to re-watch it. I realise that it's not altogether obscure but it's quite unlike anything De Palma has done since.

    Phantom Of The Paradise 1974

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071994/

Saw it a couple of times on TV more than a few years back. A musical Faustian parody, it's at once deliriously funny and quite creepy. A fantastic score and contains numerous nods to music, film and literature. Inescapably 70's and I seriously wonder what De Palma was on when he made it.

I'm gonna hunt that sucker down.

I thought it was the one with Paul Williams.Man that name is a blast from the past.
PW was huge(pun intended considering his diminutive size) for a while.
I was surprised to see he's still living because I literally hadn't heard his name in years.

In reference to a previous comment: De Palma now there's a director with a Hitchcock hard-on.

Yeah, think I'll dig out the Bugsy Malone soundtrack. Sure I have it somewhere.

Speaking of De Palma, I saw a pretty good Scene By Scene interview with him and Mark Cousins a while back.
