OK, now you're just fucking with us.
If you claim that Last Year At Marienbad makes a scintilla of sense, I'll have Idol kill you.
In his new suit, snappy haircut and best Canadian noir repartee...you'll be really sorry.

An obscure movie that I enjoy is The Keep from 1983 an early work by director Michael Mann, all haunting atmosphere and a Tangerine Dream soundtrack.

There are alot of good movies produced in Japan. They are not commonly seen in the western countries perhaps, but many are really good. Examples: Grave of the fireflies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095327/), My Darling is a foreigner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1606197/).

Pretty sure after 43,309 votes someone in the West would of heard of it . I've been meaning to get it but don't have the time.

I didn't know Michael Mann directed The Keep.I does have his fingerprints all over it though - dripping in atmosphere with a plot that takes forever to get going.
It's actually pretty scary though or maybe I'm confusing fear with me simply starting when suddenly awakening from dozing off.

Supposedly there's an extended version that helps in explaining everything a bit better but unfortunately I've never seen it.One reason to belong to CG I guess.

See also The Outpost .Nazis, horror, atmosphere and a more contemporary ( aka less suspense plot more gore) spin on marginally the same sort of thing.

I'll second that recommendation. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464141/ For those who need a recognizable name involved to get interested in a movie with subtitles, it was produced by Guillermo del Toro.

For those willing to give subs a chance, Largo Winch is a pretty decent French Action/Thriller (And,yes, I did actually put French, action, and thriller in the same sentence).

La Femme Nikita .Le salaire de la peur(The Wages of Fear) remade quite well as Sorcerer by Bill Friedkin as was Nikita by John Badham as Point of No Return .Taxi not to be confused with the one with Queen Latifah,Subway -Christopher Lambert before he was Connor MacCloud and let's not forget Leon the Professional.
