SubEdit Player - very good player and you can easly change widht/height during playing.
Media Player Classic - also easy to change.

    vlc does change the resolution.
Can crop it (to remove the black lines like you want) or you can resize (stretch to fit).

Definitely go for VLC. Much lighter, more efficient, and more compatible than WMP.

use vlc, its simple, clean, and lightweight

just right click on the video when its playing > aspect ratio > 4:3 Letterbox

been using zoom player for a long while. It has an option to automatically set whatever video you play back to a set ratio. since i have a wide-screen monitor i set it to 16:9 and it automatically stretches everything.

I have not found another player that does it automatically. you keep having to do it for every video.

I use BSPlayer. I find the image quality higher than VLC. It has all the functions you mentioned too.

VLC yo! Extremely light program, and easy to use! No flashy GUI to get confused with.
