Excuse my ignorance(I know you have been doing that&#33 but how can you have a black hole?(I do know what I have let myself in for with that question&#33

Surely only the rim and sides of the hole are black but the hole itself does not contain any colour reflecting particles.

I think I'll have a wee lie down

    Black is not a colour.

Every planet (etc) has an escape velocity. This is the speed at which something must travel to escape it's gravitational pull.

A black hole is a collapsed star, which has collected more and more matter. It therefore has an enormous amount of material in a small space.

The higher the mass the higher the escape velocity. For a black hole the escape velocity is higher than the speed of light.

Any light which hits it cannot reflect back, because it is not travelling fast enough.

It is therefore black, total absence of reflected light.

It's effectively a hole in space.

Things fall into it, but never come back out.
