It's all a big money-stealing scam.
Their first priority is to get as many people as possible to buy books, then next priority is making sure you buy from their store.

Throughout my entire time at uni I only bought a part share in one book, and I did alright. Just use the library. I think you can photocopy about a third of a book too before you infringe copyright.
