I honestly enjoy reading Clarkson. It's mostly compilations from his newspaper columss but they are good for a wee 3 or 4 page at a time dip in.
Bill Bryson is good for that too. Bit of frippery.

zed, btw: You could give some of neil gaiman's lighter work a bash if you like Pratchett. You could start off with the one he and Pratchett co-wrote, even, Good Omens. After that, neverwhere might be well worth a read.

Good Omens is a good idea.
There's also the Pratchett non discworld stuff if you haven't read that. Mostly aimed at the kids but you might like it if you like his style.
