Are there any companies that do a "lifetime" access to usenet for a fee, or any long-term access?
I ask because generally these are cheaper than to purchase the same length, and seeing how I'll be using Usenet until it (or I; whichever comes first =P) die, it's pretty much a safe bet that usenet will be around for as long as the internet is alive...

Even if a company looks strong and financially healthy now, anything can happen. I would be worried that if they go under you would lose whatever money you had paid out to them. And credit card usually only give you a couple months after a purchase to try and do a chargeback if you didn't get what you paid for.
There are several companies that are offering to lock in a monthly rate for as long as you have service with them. Astraweb, Simply Usenet, Usenetserver and Usenetnow all have something like this. Take a look at them rather than paying hundreds upfront and possibly getting burned later on.
