I suppose I'm just a fan of a simpler time. Even just 20 yrs ago...

I look at the way kids are today as compared to how I grew up and I'm pretty critical of it all whenever the subject comes up.

I grew up in a small town of around 6K. I had dirt bike. I had a BMX bike and I never wore a helmet with it. I went fishing. I went hunting. I worked on my Dad's truck with my Dad. I saw my first naked woman in a trashy nudie mag in a friend's Dad's closet. I never rode in a car seat. As a matter of fact, I can recall being a young boy and laying in the back window of the car when riding with my Mom. I made trails in the woods. I made forts.

These days, I don't even see kids out playing. Ever. Where the fook are they all? I assume they're couped up inside playing video games or looking at porn at the ripe age of 7 or something. Wherever they are, they're missing out on the finer things in life. I go back to my hometown and go to the fishing hole I grew up going to and it's desolate. Do kids not fish anymore?? Do the simple things in life no longer interest them? The very few that I see on bicycles are riding enormous mountain bikes that won't fit them for another 10 years and the law requires that they wear helmets. () I never see a kid on a BMX bike anymore doing bunny-hops or building little ramps to jump everything in sight. They don't help their Dad's work on vehicles anymore b/c no one works on their own vehicle any longer, myself included. Every square inch of space under the hood is jam packed with anti-emissions gear and computers.

I'm a man of my convictions, and this drive-thru world, it just ain't right...

The Internet is such a powerful thing and kids don't know how to take it all in. Kids are big gullible sponges and they believe most of what they read and hear. I stand by yours and my right to speak freely, but I worry about what kids learn from the Internet and TV and how it's shaping them.

If I could find a job earning a good wage in a small town, I'd up and move in a second and forget about all these ninnies.

Kids did group activities, learned to work as a team, spent a lot of time out of doors, went on camping trips, learned leadership skills, got to grips with nature and developed essential survival skills.....

The internet is a wonderful thing, but you'd truly have to be selfish to pick it over a cure for cancer.

Let's see.

A cure for cancer would save millions upon millions of lives. And would almost entirely be a positive thing, barring a slighly increased rate of population growth, which could lead to further over-population and whatnot.

The positive gain would be immediate, though.

The Internet is, potentially, a channel for free speech for people who oherwise have none, cf China. It facilitates cheap trans-border cooperation between scientists, it could, again potentially, work as a means to provide people with a greater understanding in each other, thus, in extension, it might provide some means of protection against people developing xenophobia. It might even, in time open up nations to the point where it became much harder to wage war on a nationalist basis, as it's increasingly turning us into a global community and etc. It's also making it much harder for nations to keep their dirty secrets.

It is, however, also a place where pedophiles and other unsavoury elements can communicate freely. And with the amount of absolute fuck-ups taking refuge online, so to speak, when they can't make it in real life, areas of the world can get misrepresented, cf mueslies and canadians on here, possibly giving rise to misconceptions about the rest of the world. And so on and so forth.

It's not all good, in short, but it has a lot of potential, and it's slowly changing the world on a fundamental level.

I'd follow the dollar to a nice place to live. Small towns pay little more than minimum wage (if more) for any job in town. Small towns generally have no big businesses and are for the most part, "Mom and Pop" stores.

I follow the money so that my life is comfortable and I can enjoy it instead of working until I die.

No, I read all of it and took it all in but that bit was the bit I wanted to respond to. The rest is kind of hard to discuss because I agree with you that times have changed. But times have changed because people like you have allowed it. There's no point lamenting the breakdown of communities, which is responsible for kids not being allowed out to roam feely in the great outdoors anymore, when you yourself contribute to that. I'm not having a go at you, but you can't have it all ways. You either follow the money and spend most of your time working or you stay in your little town and take a lesser wage and live a simpler life (your parents managed it) and you get that small town social cohesion. It's a choice you've made and have to live with, as do we all.
