In this case it is not sufficient to give a one word answer.
The human body has 9 orifices....What has ten holes. When one is open the other nine are closed. When one is closed the other nine are open?
Eyes - 2
Ears - 2
Nose - 2
Mouth - 1
Anus - 1
Genitals - 1
Maybe they're all open if there isn't a dirty great hole open in your chest, and they're closed if there is?

I was more thinking about the cruxifiction.
Holes opened then "closed"/filled by the nails.
As each one went in, the ninth (the mouth) opened in pain.
There's a few things wrong with that, but that's my best answer

The riddle came from the old testiment and it was one of the things Solomon used to woo the Queen of Sheba. I think it's used in some Muslim teachings too. Well, there ya go now.
