When expressing a date, it makes more sense to me to state the month prior to the date, but I guess that's just the way it was learned and thus, computes better.

I also had a tough time in Spanish classes in college for the same reason.
It took me forever to remember that as a rule, adjectives in Spanish go after the noun, the opposite of English.
