I leave both desktop and laptop on 24/7 unless forced by software or hardware maintenance.
    I run folding@home on both.

I always turn my fire hazard off when i go to bed. That's the primary reason why I use a seedbox.

I haven't turned off my home pc for more than a few minutes at a time for probably over 10 years. I have upgraded a couple times during that, but I have never had a drive or cpu go bad.

My last Dell desktop lasted 5 years and all I had to replace was the DVD burner and the sound card. My current machine is an HP and it has been running for close to a year now.

I always use a good UPS that does line conditioning, like the APC SmartUPS. That alone will save you from 99% of hardware issues.

My desktop I only turn on to use it. My laptop is usually on, but I turn it off if I'm leaving for a while. My server is on 24/7.
