Power Supply

When looking for a new power supply, what are the main things to look for? I am sort of Partial to Enermax, because a friend of mine has built a few computers and everything else fries something...
How would I know what wattage is best for a new system? Or is there anything else I might need to know when looking around?

depends on what hardware and devices are running on your machine. Enermax are good. it doesnt matter what wattage you use. too much is better, as you know components will not be underpowered. what are u running?

I just purchased a 450 watt max power supply. Which one you need really depends on what your power consumption will be. If you will be using a Pentium based system, I have one I can sell you for $50. Max wattage 250. Not enough if you want to have multiple drives, a powerful video card, etc, etc.

Nothing at the moment, I was planning on building a new computer though. I've heard alot of sad stories dealing with Power Supplies though, so I figured I better do some research... The new comp will most likely be running:

Either: P4 3000x or AMD XP3200 proc (Haven't decided on a board yet. Any suggestions?)

for that you should look for about 350 or 400w

too much power isn't gonna be a problem, too little will be though

Thanks alot.

I use that same board on the computer I&#39;m using now. (It&#39;s got a KT400 northbridge right?) I thought it only supported up to 2.8ghrtz though...

EDIT: Sorry didn&#39;t see the "-D" I use the ASUS A7V8X, any other benefits to the -D version?

it should support any amd currently made
my box only says up to 2800, but that&#39;s cos only the 2800 was made then...

plus it&#39;s an nForce2 chipset, if that&#39;s any help

edit: the d has 2 lan ports and a few other features i can&#39;t remember just now...i&#39;m sure a google search would tell though

Alright, thanks alot everyone.

(I will definatly check that board out 3rd Gen, I&#39;ve been quite pleased with the A7V8X thus far, can&#39;t hurt to get a better version of greatness. )

EDIT: on second thought, maybe I&#39;ll just save myself &#036;200 and get a XP2800, and overclock to 3200mhrtz... (Lots of case fans..........)

i&#39;vr got an Abit IC7 running a P4 2.4GHz.
excellent board, cant knock it. there&#39;s also a IC7-G and IC7-G Max II & III.
The sound on card is excellent.

and u might wanna think about watercooling for that beast of an overclock
