i would just buy a webcam. cuz i would rather spend 20-30 bucks than break an expensive camcorder.

Whatever the case, if your cam is capable of acting as a webcam, there should have been a CD-ROM that came with it that had the proper drivers on it. (I'm assuming thats the reason your getting a black screen.) When you connect through your firewire, doesn't windows automatically detect new hardware? (because it should)

if you have an Nvidia chipset you need to have the nvidia wdm drivers installed to allow the camera to be classed as a "capture device"
    NVidia WDM Drivers Page

or try the sony support site ( )

Do whatever you can to use that camera. You will be astounded at how good it will look.

In my previous post you'll see I mentioned CMOS and CCD?
Most webcams(under $50-60) use a CMOS(complimentary metal oxide semiconductor, a microchip) to capture your image. These just plain suck. More expensive webcams use a CCD(charged coupled device, like camcorders use). The difference in quality is most noticeable.
Shit, your camera has 3 CCDs! One for each primary color in the light spectrum(red, blue and green). The quality should be very good.

    Good luck with it...
