Hi, what happens if you buy an album say of elvis presley, where does the money go? Obviously it dont go to elvis. The artists dead, so the money must go somewhere else....where!?!?!?!. Also all these small companys offering cd's (usually 60s & 70s/80s disco) for £2.99 or so. what happens there?

in the case of elvis i'm pretty sure it goes to his estate, and priscilla and lisa marie will probably be the holders of that.
i think elvis is still one of the highest earners in the industry, pretty sure i read that somewhere.
the other cd's will pay royalty fee's, unless the copyright period has ended.

It depends who owns the copyright
for example
Michael Jackson owns the Beatles copyright becasue he bought it
also the law states that you can rip off an artist song 50 years after the person who owns the copyright is dead

This is apparantly the list of the richest estates of the dead
(ammounts in million)
1 Elvis Presley $37
2 Charles Schulz $28
3 John Lennon $20
4 Dale Earnhardt $20
5 Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel $19
6 George Harrison $17
7 J.R.R. Tolkien $12
8 Bob Marley $10
9 Jimi Hendrix $8
10 Tupac Shakur $7
11 Marilyn Monroe $7
12 Jerry Garcia $5
13 Robert Ludlum $5
And yes, it depends on who owns the copyright; for example, the band who covered "A little less conversation". This was in the charts for 4 weeks at number 1 in the uk and had earned the estate another $4 million just for owning the copyright. If someone else owned it, they'd have gotten that.

That's great news, if it's true I haven't heard anything about this.
If it is true now is the best time to pick up all those beatle albums Iv'e been ripping Micheal Jackson off of.
