I assume you are running Win2k or XP. These OS's use quite a lot of memory both for themselves and for disk cache. Along with the programs you are running, 256MB used does not seem excessive (I've just looked at mine and it says 236MB free out of 512).

Why do you want to free it up ? If you weren't going to use it, there wouldn't have been much point in buying that much memory in the first place.

Some programs are a bit hesitant to give up RAM even if they really don't need it ( like K-Lite, for instance).

Try FreeRam (available from Downloads.com) and it might help a bit.

Lynx makes a good point however.

My system seems to use about 200-250 MB just keeping XP up on the monitor.

*Okay, now is the time for all the XP haters to jump in yelling about "system bloat" etc.

I've been using a program called MemTurbo, it defrags your RAM and scrubs your system for any physical RAM that can be returned to the free pool. On average, it jumps my free ram from about 320mb to 415-430mb.

Yes. I got my memturbo off kazaa and have not looked back since. It has rescued me from many potential crashes and has kicked in when th computer has frozen .
    A damn fine little program.

I have two things to say here, one i svery off topic, which is what I'll start with.

1.Why has the host been changed ?

    2. I use Ram Def XT, which is alright, but I don't see much effect.
