Thread: AMD System issue with 8 bay storage enclosures

  1. #1
    Hello

Just wondering if anyone here actually using 8 bay storage enclosures with AMD system ?

See i got one and i run into so many problem but some other users who have intel where able to use same unit with no issue

also can you recommend me a good 8 bay or 10 bay storage enclosures based on your AMD System and brand name of unit and if it is connected via eSATA or USB 3.0

do you get good transfer speed ? does it work fine or goes offline ?

    Thank in advance

My first port of call would be to see if your motherboard has a BIOS update, and then go into your Power Management and turn off pretty much everything related to USB powering down.

Can you provide a few more details, though? Motherboard model, OS, and enclosure model, would be a great start.

    Hope this helps.

To name a thing, is to pay it respect.

If you can give some details of the enclosure you have (brand/model) but more particularly the make and model of the hard drives that are installed and whether they are in an a RAID array i.e. RAID 1,2,5,6 or JBOD and whether the drives are the same size and from the same manufacturer.

I need to know the makes and models of the hard drives, in particular I need to know if any of them are Western Digital Caviar Green Hard Drives.

This is actually a problem I have run into quite frequently in non PC applications. The Western Digital 'Green' drive is so named because it is 'supposed' to be more eco-friendly. It achieves this by powering down after 20 minutes of inactivity. The fun part of this is alot of devices that these are installed into, don't send the correct signal (like a PC does) to resume operation. I have seen this same problem in D-Link DNS 320 NAS devices, AC Ryan media players and others.
Having WD Green drives and other drives in a JBOD RAID configuration will only make the problem worse, since the RAID array will fall over with some drives powering down while others stay active.

I can attest to that. My new laptop has a WD Green hard drive, and it took me a while to find out why it kept having lag spikes when nothing was hogging the system, and how to fix that by disabling Idle3 and APM. By then, the disk heads had been parked over 40000 times.

    Hi

I am running Raid F with FlexRAID on 8 drives at this Monet and one parity and i am using two 3TB Green drives with no issues
off-course i am using my computer and not NAS or Mass Storage system. The parity was built in 30 Hours and the entire configurtions and setup took about 2 Hours give n take and i am back online with Media Broswer3 but again as i said i have 5 drives that are setting and i need to buy either Mass storge system or get NAS with 1GB nic but i dont have funds for expansive NAS system at this moment

    Thanks

Well, since you have vastly more experience than I, I wish you luck in your future endeavours.
