Can someone let me know if it's absolutely necessary to configure my Mac's Airport Extreme router to forward a specified port to the static IP address of my chosen Mac computer, and to also configure the Mac's Bittorrent client (Transmission) to allow network activity on that same port (done from within the client's preferences)?

This is something that I've never been 100% certain about, and I wanted to make sure that this is correct (and that it's safe to do) so that I can have the reassurance that this is the way it's meant to be done in general...
