In chronological order, in my lifetime:

    1-Lenny Bruce

    2-Jonathan Winters

3-George Carlin (I didn't forget; while making my decisions earlier, I felt he was a bit too derivative of Lenny Bruce for inclusion on this list. I hereby change my mind.)

    4-Richard Pryor

    5-Robin Williams

    6-Eddie Izzard

All others are pretenders to the throne, which is not to say there aren't a lot of great comedians out there-just that these six, to me, qualify as true geniuses.

    EDIT:added George Carlin

An excellent list ( I am not familiar with Jonathon Winters work tho&#39 - however I would add

Tony Hancock. East Cheam's most famous son.

Billy Connoly. The man who put the cnt back in Cntry and Western.

The genius part must surely involve an element of originality ( for his/her time). I think these people displayed it. As well as being feckin' funny.
