adamp2p, man you're lucky that you didn't have more serious injuries. I wonder if your test scores will suffer as a result of shock.

my thoughts on getting an 8X dvd drive:
i have a 4X burner, it will do a dvd in about 1/2 an hour. however in instant cd/dvd it does testing and image making before burning the disk. the testing and image making takes about 2 hours on my amd 2600+ machine with 1 gb of ddr ram.

i wouldn't worry about reducing your burn time by 15 mins, only to have a total time of 2 hours 15 mins, especialy if it costs like an extra 80 quid

I am using an amd 2500+ and a full dvd takes exactly 25 min for me. Of course I am not testing first cause that is a waist of time if your process is the same for creating each DVD, or even for CDR's. I get a full no macro involvment from my firmware upgraded apex 1500 , it streams to my all in wonder 9000 , edit if needed, then burn with Neo. Anyway if you use the same process each time you make a copy then testing once on the firt DVD is all you need to do.

8x might be nice, but after 30 hours to download a dvd-r, an extra 15 minutes burning the dvd is not really important, especially if I am simply browsing or on the forum as at present.

I can't tell from the product description (even on plextor's site) what capacity of cd it will burn, I was extremely disappointed with my Sony drive to find that it was limited to exactly 80 mins, whereas my older rebadged Sanyo will go right up to 94 minutes with the right media, so I've had to keep it for those rare occasions when I burn anything above 80 mins.

I suppose what I am saying is to make sure that you aren't going to lose any features you already have, unless you NEVER use them.

I searched high and low , the LG was the best buy with it's capabilities a week ago. I compared at least 9 products from 4 locations the 4040B was my best investment.

I like the LG 4040B too. I think it's about the best choice right now. I also think that I read that LG has put the production line in service to produce 500,000 units per month. I guess they didn't want to run into the same problem as Sony did when they first introduced the multi mode DVD -R and +R units.

Also the Neo burning software is better than the Roxio 5 platinum which I paid for like 3+ years ago, even with their updates. That software cost me 100. canadian and now neo comes with 4040B so like I said Best Buy from what I see out there. Actualy Roxio is a great program but the editor in neo is way better.

    Isn't that Nero?

And as for software being expensive... I don't think so... Isn't that what this discussion board about? Keep sharing !

Anyway, vader, check the 'verifieds' for Roxio Easy CD&DVD Creator 6.

I''m well happy 8x is out I've been waiting for this for a while. But whats the 'time' for a dvd disk (ie equivalent of 80mins for a cdr)?

    700 MB = 80 Minutes
    so
    4.7 GB = 537 Minutes

    (Equivalent audio.)

That 8x speed seems to be only for DVD+R and not DVD-R
