btw ilw, if the error message 3rd gen noob saw was "Unable to Mount Boot Volume", why wouldn't that be searchable thru any ms site?

i think the error he saw may have been 'unmountable' instead of 'unable to mount' i tried to google it and came up with just macintosh sites, but it sounded like a reasonable error so i just googled the 'boot volume' bit and came up with a bunch of sites. I think it may be the same at the microsoft website, because the error message was ever so slightly changed it returns useless matches.
Btw i think the media player thing might be something to do with the registry being restored when using the last known good thing. thats just a blind guess though.
good old xp repair, works every timeyou try to change your boot logo or something 3rd?? or softice maybe??
ok, thanks for the links and help people
it seems that the "last known good config" has messed things up rather a lot
as well as the wmp error, windows update software wasn't installed
anyway, it's installed now and i've got the current updates and everything
hopefully the problem is fixed..
thanks again for the help
