Definitely don't overlook http://www.videohelp.com as Sanka suggested - an excellent resource.

    Aimersoft MKV converter

It is very simple to use and it keeps the video and audio in sync with the video output as Xvid

When you convert MKV to AVI select Xvid for the output, with 2500 kbps for the video bitrate and 256 kbps mp3 for audio output

One thing that you would need to do is split the video output into no more then 1 hour 30 minutes for each output video clip, if a movie is over 1 hour 30 minutes then split it into two output video files

This is a good DVD player to play AVI

Philips DVP5990 HDMI 1080p Upscaling DVD Player w/ USB and Divx

This upscales the standard resolution video to 1080p Full High Definition 1920 x 1080 pixels

Wal-Mart has this DVD player for $57.88

You can also plug in a hard drive and other usb drives in the DVD Player

This is a good deal on a LCD Monitor with Full HD 1080p with 1920 x 1080 pixels

    ASUS VH226H Black 21.5" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen 16:9 Full HD 1080P LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 (ASCR 12000 : 1) Built in Speakers - Retail

    Full HD 1080P resolution

    Connectors D-Sub, DVI, HDMI

    Original Price: $209.99
    You Save: $20.00
    $189.99

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236051

Also get a HDMI cable as well

This is a cheap man's James Bond way of doing this

if you're looking to play mkv on an xbox or something... avi is not the way to go, you should use XenonMKV.. some people use gotsent but imo it sucks ass.

It basically splits the audio from the video, converts the audio from ac3 to aac leaving the video untouched and puts them together in the mp4 container to play on the 360
