As far as I'm concerned, music has to use melodies, rhythms, harmonies, etc. to supplement or complement the lyrics and emotions in the song.
melodies? have you litened to rap/hip hop lately?
harmonies? listen to 2pac - dear mama [/b][/quote]
I expect something a little better rhythmically from a drummer than a basic dragged 8-beat, which is almost uniform for rap.
Melodies... most raps I've heard have two notes; eminem's recent songs are no exception, the one that's the main rap for 8-mile is an example.
Hip-hop doesn't come into the equation because I wasn't talking about it.
And harmonies? How can you have a harmony if the guys aren't singing? Granted, there may be some raps with musical choruses with harmonies, but I'm talking about rapping in general here.
