Rat/mouse Problem

I live in a particularly old house (was sold for the fourth time in 1750-odd).
today, i have been hearing a scuttling noise from behind one of the skirting boards in the computer room...
i believe this noise is a rat or possibly a mouse...but i'm not sure

i have tried to lure out the creature with some bread and cheese (stereotypical food), however, it doesn't want to play game

is there any way i can dispose of the vermin without getting any mouse traps and/or cats?

my original plan was to hit it with something heavy (i have a wooden mallet and a sledgehammer ready), however, i'm frightened about possible 'spray' on impact

you can buy a sticky tray that mice and rats get caught in. then again you have to kill them then which is not nice.

I had to empty the traps at an old summer job which meant going around with a shovel and whacking the rats who had been caught with the trays then whacking them in the bin with it.

it was a lovely job especailly when turning up to work hungover.

this sounds like a good idea...

i could improvise with a some sellotape, wouldnt cost me a thing...
