Whilst I feel unqualified to gainsay any of your proposed scenarios I have to confess to finding them, at best, unlikely.

Occam's razor tells us that he was just a thieving cunt and his Mam not only condoned that, she was the one who started him off on this road of petty crime.

Whether it was for personal gain on her part, or intended as a career path for him is a moot point.
