Thread: 3rd Gen Noob, A Review Of Your New Card?

  1. #11
Here are shot's of n0ob's card:

    and

Sounds from this review that the card actually overclocks okay. It sounds like you got a major boost from your last card. So how does it feel to be ATI?

The following is a quote from Xbit labs:
"I overclocked the card with the help of Rage3D Tweaker version 3.8 as the frequency range offered by TGM seemed too narrow. The graphics chip sped up to amazing 525MHz without a screech, while the memory could do nothing better than +10MHz. Otherwise, there were horrible artefacts in the picture. The main reason for this is the slow memory chips, and also the insufficient cooling (a bad contact between the chips and the heatsink). So, I had to stop at 305MHz (610MHz DDR) mark, which can hardly be even called overclocking. So, the 0.13micron process provided the graphics chip with huge overclocking potential, but the memory of this card doesn’t match the GPU. By the way, recalling our overclocking experience with Tyan Tachyon G9500 PRO, I can say that the memory chips on that card also were a bottleneck.

As for 2D quality, it’s all right, just like by Tachyon G9500 PRO. A slight blur of the image appeared in 1600x1200@85Hz only."

Oh, and did you get a chance to play with Rage 3d tweak?

i've not had a chance to try and overclock it yet, i'm pretty happy with the performance as it is just now, really...it's a huge leap over my last card, hopefully it'll be able to play half life 2 at decent resolutions/quality levels...

as for the swap from nvidia to ati, well, i've only had a few minor quibbles...i did have one hang whilst playing battlefield 1942 and also, i noticed a kind of a 'jump' in games, where the display was perfectly smooth and the framerates were high, however, every couple of hundred frames there was a 'jump' in the action
that seems to have gone now though

    For optimal performance, why don't you step down to 800 X 600 X 32?

i suppose that's an easy solution, but if i ran it at a lower resolution, i'd have more jaggies, so i'd need aa on...i'll try it out though

My Radeon 9500 (successful soft mod pro 9500) runs well at 1024X768 with 4X antialising. How about vertical sync? Off of course.

I mentioned to you before about the ATI Radeon 9x00 series tweak guide

That is a decent introduction to Rage3d and is definately worth your reading. There are many many many available tweakable settings available through Rage3d tweak. There are many available options for various configurations.

"Rage3D had a chat with Terry Makedon, developer in chief of the Catalyst drivers, Joe Chien, director of software at ATI in Silicon Valley and Ben BH, the ATI software VP.

A worth read with some interesting informations and you can read the log over here"

    Have fun! B)

having the burden of being noobs mate, i saw the card first hand and can honestly say it was superb, currently im stocked with an Nvidia geforce 3 ti 200 (128MB) which will play most things but with up and coming releases my card could and will no doubt struggle, it manages most things at 30fps+, but ill be forking over the money for this card, besides i opened a student account with natwest which gives me £55 quid just for joining and an interest FREE overdraft of £1250 a year, which i dont pay back till i graduate, so i might buy a 9700pro all in wonder just to pull one over noob

seriously though, those among you who aspire for the likes of the 9700 9800 series take a step "back" to this, and overclock if need be, with the £200+ quid saved you could invest in a new cpu
