Well, the first time it took us over 1.5 years to conceive, and that was with tracking my period etc on the calendar and taking the ovulation tests they sell.
The second time was just pure chance. I wasn't using any protection and it's not like we were having loads of sex (you tend to start seeing your bed as just a place for sweet sweet sleep when you have a child under 1) and I was breastfeeding (which is meant to reduce fertility).
However!
On both occasion I had been on a diet for a few months that was naturally high in folic acid. It had nothing to do with trying to conceive, it's just the usual stuff I do when I need to lose some weight; cut out all carbs except for a few dark Ryvita crackers, eat lots of grapefruit and melon, fresh vegetable soup every day and steamed chicken or fish with more green veg for dinner.
There is some research that indicates a link between diet and fertility but then again... In the end it just happens when it's meant to happen.
