Chinese GOV requires PCs to have censorship software (the great firewall is live)

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has ordered that all personal computers, whether made in China or imported from abroad, must include specific software to filter inappropriate information. Rebecca MacKinnon, assistant professor at the Journalism & Media Studies Center at the University of Hong Kong, has posted a copy of the Chinese government order on her Web site.

According to her translation, Web filtering software called Green Dam Youth Escort must be installed on all PCs sold in China as of July 1. The software also must be included on a hard-drive partition or on a CD included with the computer to allow for reinstallation.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology instructed schools to install the censorship technology by the end of last month and has also told computer makers to install the software on each computer sold in China from July 1.

The companies developing the Green Dam-Youth Escort software say it is currently designed only to filter pornography. The propaganda chief, Li Changchun, is championing a nationwide campaign against "vulgar content".

Cracks in China censorware patched



The Chinese government has ordered patches to fix security holes in censorship software which will be shipped with every new computer sold in the country from 1 July.

Researchers from the University of Michigan found major flaws in Green Dam's software which they claimed would allow a hacker to take over a machine. They also found the software included politically controversial sites along with lists of pornographic content.

But an official at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that patches were available to fix the problems, and that the list of banned sites was created by Dazheng Human Language Technology Academy Company, not by the Chinese government. The Green Dam Youth Escort software was a joint venture between Dazheng Human Language Technology Academy and Jinhui Computer System Engineering Company.

The official also insisted the pornwall is voluntary and the government only requires it be shipped on, or with, new computers - whether it is turned on or not is up to individuals.
