Is it really anonymous? And what protocols do you think are best?

    Wikipedia about Anonymity
More strictly, and in reference to an arbitrary element (e.g. a human, an object, a computer), within a well-defined set (called the "anonymity set"), "anonymity" of that element refers to the property of that element of not being identifiable within this set. If it is not identifiable, then the element is said to be "anonymous".
While all of the participants are severally identifiable, it remains unknown who actually did what. That is because in an anonymous structure, you cover others and they do the same for you. An end-point could see the IP 92.116.21.120 sending infringing material, however this does not mean 92.116.21.120 hosts this material or is even aware of its existence.

In Japan, anonymous peer-to-peer technology is popular and practically used. Maybe it's because they have good infrastructure, harder punishment for infringement or another culture. In the western world, most projects remain experimental.

With the rise of Usenet binaries and download sites like Rapidshare (as well as video sites like Youtube) you can find virtually anything you want without the risk being seen by the copyright police, so there's really not much need for anonymous P2P anymore.

Because the required internal-proxying made them extremely slow, anonymous P2P networks never became popular, and therefore never acquired any significant content (except in Japan, where 50-100megabit connections have been common for years)

The only possible future I see for anonymous P2P is as sanctuary for absolutely verboten material, like child-porn.

Thank you to everyone for the information. I guess that P2P is not completely anonymous and is also very inefficient, so it hasn't really caught on in most of the world. I had at first signed up to ask only this question, but it turns out that this forum is an interesting place to read and I hope to be around more often.

Peer to Peer - Connect to an IP from an IP, so it can never be anonymous, unless you use a VPN but then again some VPN services log IP address .

Usenet - you connect to the newsserver, they know your IP. If the newsserver doesn't keep logs and stuff, who cares.

P2P - you connect to another user, this user knows your IP. If your provider doesn't keep logs and stuff, who cares.

I guess the lack of anonymity is evidenced simply by the name of the technology.

Would you just have to check each service or protocol on an individual basis to be sure of each one's policies?
