FFS, Avira is a perfectly fine program and it's free, as far as false positives being a major problem - rarely.
Norton makes a very good product. Its memory leakage problem is a thing of the past, and has been for a bit.
NOD32 is a decent AV, also.
Safe computing habits are essential to your computer's security. Update Windows and its software, use an alternative browser, be careful when surfing the interweb (you take your chances when you google for keygens and serial numbers, duh.) Run high risk programs with policy restrictions or in a sandbox.
A decent AV, along with an inbound firewall is the only active software one needs to be fairly secure. Use on-demand scanners regularly for spyware and such.

I have always liked NOD32 2.7 because of its speed and not having to look for keys.
